It's all too bad as this used to be one of the best places to eat in Killingworth, obviously someone's giving up on keeping it top notch.
This is definitely a locals bar, with a conservative, veterans feel. They have very good food at a fair price as well as a fully stocked bar. They don't have a large dining area, so it can be rather full sometimes.
Entering the men's room was another disappointment. There was loose trim pieces and warped wood so as it looked like it may cave in on you. It needs to be fixed, scrapped of all the layers of dirt and then some paint applied as the bare wood is now showing through. The room reeked of stale urine and the urinal being placed way too high leads you to believe that may be part of the problem. After washing up in there you didn't feel any cleaner. This place is in dire need of a "bar rescue" by Jon Taffer ....and soon. Makes you wonder what they're hiding in the kitchen.
Use to be one of my favorite places. Went on a Tues night around 7:00, Ordered a beer batter fish sandwich and beer. The size of the fish fillet was adequate and delicious, but the roll was way too small for it, two tomato slices and 1 piece of romaine. The sandwich kept falling apart and was in need of a few toothpicks. Trying to get the waitress attention was futile as she was engaged in a personal conversation and not attending the bar area where I was. After wandering around some I finally found some picks by the exit door.
I love this place! She even has a TON of gluten free options. We always enjoy our time here and love getting to visit - the menu is wonderful and so is all of the staff :)
The bar stools after trying to sit on a few different ones, seemed be worn out and you ended up sinking into the middle with the hard frame of the stool pinching your sciatic nerve ... very uncomfortable. The waitress acknowledged they were shot. Additionally the bar was all sticky, with so few customers that night you would think a little more effort would be applied to keeping things clean. Items are stored helter skelter all over the dinning room. Looking around the place it's obvious the place needs a team to come in and implement a 5S clean up event.
Hands Down the Best Rack of Ribs around. A half rack is plenty as they also give you a nice salad and and potato or rice. They have a great array of delicious foods on the menu. The Garlic shrimp dish is great for an app. The owner Jan is hands on and very friendly. Old town charm. Can't go wrong at the Killingworth Cafe. I'm going there this weekend.
Excellent, from cocktails to dessert a great experience.
